David continues to make an impact for future generations by instituting more details regarding worship and who does what. I remember the days in ministry when we would create job descriptions for each of our positions. That’s exactly what David is doing here, but he’s taking it a step further. David is identifying the players who will be the first to follow these precepts.

Have you ever been part of a ministry team at your church? Then you can appreciate David’s mission. He is taking away any question about expectations. A ministry team will always be more efficient if the goals and intentions are clear. It appears David remains strong and confident despite the fact his reign is coming to an end. He is bound and determined to set Solomon up for success.

The Chronicler maintains his distinction between priests and Levites. These groups are not all lumped together as one big happy family, even though the priests descend from Aaron who was from the tribe of Levi, too. It is good for us to recall that the role of priests was given by God to Aaron, while David prescribed roles for the Levites.

David was putting together order so there would be no chaos between temple leadership. There were many qualified candidates for the temple jobs. David took the lead in making sure the distribution of duties was fair and unbiased. By casting lots, it was believed that God’s divine hand was at work in the assignments.

When we think of our own day and how we work in our church committees or ministry teams, many times we look to Romans 12:4-5 for counsel. It reads: “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.” There are many qualified people ready to serve, but not everyone should work with children or sing on the praise team!

In our own ministries, it’s helpful to recognize each person has God-given gifts and abilities that fit best with certain tasks and roles. The body of Christ flourishes when we find the right fit for our own spiritual gifts. Do you know how you fit best into the body of Christ?

Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for how you inspired King David right up until the end of his reign to set plans in motion for his successor’s success. There is so much wisdom in this approach. It is such an honor to serve you. Thank you for how you have gifted me to be your servant. May I use my gifts to glorify you and shine brightly in this dark world so others can find their way into your loving presence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
