Read Mark 13:1-23
Jesus gives us so much detail in this apocalyptic passage, and it’s frightening. I don’t think Jesus meant for us to be scared, rather to be prepared. The end times are not going to be pretty. For those who will witness such things, there will be death and chaos. The promise is also there for us believers. The Holy Spirit will be with us.
I have vivid memories of being afraid of my closet as a child. I was sure there was something to fear lurking in the shadows, and the closet door had to be closed every night lest I couldn’t fall asleep. I can still hear my dad saying, “There is nothing to fear; I’ll be right across the hall.”
While my fears were based on an imaginary foe, as believers, our foes are certainly not imaginary. They will rear their ugly heads and bring calamity. Jesus says so. But he also says not to panic. These things need to happen. These things will happen.
Much of what we read here is found in other apocalyptic writings in the Old Testament, other gospels, and in Revelation. Here, Jesus is addressing four of the disciples privately. They wanted to know more about when the temple was going to be destroyed. I’m not sure they expected all that Jesus shared. Can you imagine what those disciples felt that day? I’m not sure they could have wrapped their head around such information. We struggle to do that!
I’ve heard many believers speak today, believing we’re in the end times. If that’s true, there is a lot more destruction and upheaval yet to come. Jesus doesn’t say how long these days will last, but he does say, “But for the sake of his chosen ones he has shortened those days.”
What resonated with me most was Jesus’ words, including a promise, “And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” Christ followers are under attack in our society, and even more so in some parts of the world. It seems the more we stand on the truth of Scripture, the more we’re despised and marginalized. The name of Jesus is being trampled, and we Christians are often left feeling like outcasts for our love and devotion of the one and only King. Jesus says we must endure these hardships, no matter the cost.
This passage reveals three end times warnings regarding: (1) the appearance of deceivers, wars, famine, and natural disaster; (2) the persecution of Jesus’ followers; and (3) the appearance of false messiahs. The end is coming, but it is not happening yet. So have no fear. Just be ready.
Let’s pray. Thank you, Lord, for glimpses in your word of what is to come. While it is not a pretty future on earth, I trust that if I endure to the end, it will be glorious. A final destiny in your arms will be worth any and all suffering in this world. Help me stay strong. Help me never waver no matter what may come. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
