Read Hebrews 11:1-16
What a beautiful Chapter this will be to reflect on faith. We can’t help but be refreshed and renewed when we receive clarity like this! Before we can know if we’ve “got faith,” we need to understand what faith is. The Preacher does a great job here of clarifying that for us. How can you not have faith when you truly believe this statement. “By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.”
The Preacher also uses Old Testament heroes of faith to illustrate how faith works. We can take clues from their faithfulness and apply them to our lives. Which of these spoke to you the most? (1) giving back to God; (2) pleasing God; (3) seeking God; (4) listen to God even when it’s unpopular; (5) obeying God even when you don’t understand; and (6) confidently trusting God to keep his promises.
While we are still here on this earth, we can keep in mind what these heroes knew. “They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth.” Our destination is with God, “a better place, a heavenly homeland.” So, when things seem a little out of control, it is your faith that will help you get through. Remember the best is yet to come!
While our faith is often inward and personal, we reveal it in our outward response to the world. Do we let the circumstances of life crowd out our faith or make it stronger? Think about that one for a moment. When the going gets rough do we abandon God or turn in to him and seek his mercy and grace?
When we have faith, we have confidence that God will act. We have an understanding and connection to God that people without faith don’t share. I can’t imaging going through some of the things I’ve endured in my life without having my friend, Jesus, right beside me. I have the faith to know that I am not alone.
What does your faith look like? We can all be champions of faith for our generation. Take note of what the Old Testament models of faith shared. Ask God to show you how you can multiply your faith and spread the life-saving news with others.
Let’s pray. Father, your power and wisdom are infinite, and I am in awe of you. My faith is my confidence in you and the assurance you are there. Forgive me for times when I am unsure and doubts creep in. I want to grow closer to you. Walk with me today and guide my steps. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
