Luke 21:25-36 – Don’t Be Afraid

the word END with road and fire around it

Read Luke 21:25-36

The Gospel of Luke shares more details about what to look for when Jesus returns. People have been noticing such signs for many years, but I’m guessing that what Jesus describes is more intense than any changes we’ve seen.

Even though we’re walking through Advent together, it’s easy to get caught up in the distractions of the Christmas season. Magnificent as Jesus’ birth was, that was only the beginning. We must never forget Jesus is coming again, too, and that’s something to be ready for!

Jesus says, “People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth.” For some reason, this statement brings me peace and assurance rather than fear. I am thankful for the warning so that when we see these crazy signs, we won’t be afraid. Instead, we might even be thrilled knowing Jesus’ return is coming soon. Don’t be afraid of what is going on; embrace it and pay attention.

Curious that we see the fig tree example again. Have you ever eaten a fig before? I had my first fresh, right off the tree, delicious fig here in Mexico. I even use them frequently in my homemade granola. I’ve shared this before, but according to “Nourish,” the blog of WebMD, “Figs have been associated with health and prosperity since ancient times.” It’s not surprising that Jesus would use this example; it would make sense to his followers. For us, he could be talking about any fruit-bearing tree.

Other than to be watching for these signs that signal our salvation is near, we are to “pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.” Jesus told us to do what? Pray! As believers, we need to be on our knees in prayer, holding on to the promises of God, trusting in the strength and courage only the Holy Spirit can provide.

Jesus doesn’t want us to fall prey to the fear or to the lies that many people will spout about Him. God’s Word is the perfect place to spend time learning about the character of God and how He longs for a relationship with us. We can choose how we respond to these “coming horrors.” At least we’ve been warned.

Rather than worry or try to figure out when all of this is going to happen, we should be joyful. Jesus’ return is near. Our salvation is near! I love Paul’s wisdom in Romans 13:11. “This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” How true! And in Philippians 4:4, Paul reminds us, “Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!”

folded hands laying on top of what appears to be a BibleLet’s pray. Lord, calm my fears when I see the horrors of sin loose in this world. Turn my fear into joy, for I know you will be victorious! I trust you will walk with me along the way. Thank you for your protection and guidance. Prepare my heart so I am ready when you return. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
