Read Mark 13:24-37

What a passage to reflect on for Advent! We hear from Jesus directly about what his second coming will be like. How helpful it is to know what we are preparing for. Advent reminds us that our job is to be ready, stay alert, and keep watch.

Jesus shares some details so that we’ll be able to recognize them. Otherwise, we might miss some of the signals. Just like when we see trees blooming or grass sprouting up from the ground. We know what those signals mean and can respond accordingly. I’m especially thankful to live in Mexico, where all the flowers and fruits bloom year-round.

Do you wonder what Jesus means when he talks about the “anguish” happening in “those” days? His warning is for unpleasant days preceding his return. Until that day comes, Jesus wants us to remain faithful and not fall away when times get hard. In times of strife, we can imagine how Jesus is cheering for us, guiding us toward the right path.

We can look around our world right now and easily see people enduring hard, “unpleasant” times. My heart cries out especially for all the believers who are persecuted for their faith. It’s all around us, not just in faraway countries, affecting nameless people. Do you ever feel like you can’t be open with people about your faith and trust in Jesus?

I like the vision of the angels coming to get me. “And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world—from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven.” I’m counting on being one of his “chosen ones.” While I wait, I will worship God and seek a deeper relationship with Jesus. Time to stay alert! We don’t want to be caught sleeping and not paying attention to Jesus.

two people praying together Jesus is hereLet’s pray. Lord, you are great and worthy to be praised. My heart overflows with adoration and praise. Help me grow closer to you every day. I want to be ready for your return. Come, Lord Jesus! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
