John 17:1-26 – What a Prayer!

Read John 17:1-26

What a prayer indeed! Jesus has been our Redeemer from the day of creation. Jesus, our friend and confidant, has been by our side from the very first day. That same Jesus was praying for us, not the world! Can you believe it?

We may be in the world, but Jesus called out the world and made it clear He was praying for us. Jesus himself had been tempted by the evil one controlling the world. As if the world were a lost cause, Jesus was praying for those who knew him. It’s sometimes hard and unpopular to live in the world when you think like Jesus. Mark 14:32-52 – At Gethsemane

Read Mark 14:32-52

Jesus knew what was about to happen. His soul was crushed. He wanted his closest followers near him during this difficult time. Our hearts should start to break, too, as we lament with Jesus. What Jesus endured, he did for you and me. Jesus wanted the suffering removed, and yet he said, “I want your will to be done, not mine.”

Jesus models for us such restraint in surrendering his desires to the will of God. This is one lesson we can learn simply from observing Jesus’ response to his situation. Praying for God’s will to be done should be our “go-to” as well. It’s even a petition in The Lord’s Prayer, the prayer Jesus taught us to pray. Continue reading “Mark 14:32-52 – At Gethsemane”

Luke 11:1-4 – Jesus Teaches Us to Pray

Read Luke 11:1-4

This reading moves us to the second half of our theme of the “Holy Spirit & Prayer.” The idea of prayer can be foreign to new Christ-followers who wonder what it means to pray. Isn’t Jesus the best source to teach us to pray? The disciples thought so, too. They had often seen Jesus go off on his own to spend quiet time with God. Talking to God is what prayer is all about.

I imagine the disciples wondered what Jesus would ask the Father. For folks who grew up in a Protestant church like I did, these words in our text are familiar. Known as “The Lord’s Prayer,” we find another teaching of Jesus’ instructions in Matthew 6:9-13. The Lord’s Prayer is read weekly by congregations as part of the order of service. What a great prayer to pray in community as well as individually! Continue reading “Luke 11:1-4 – Jesus Teaches Us to Pray”
