Mark 2:1-17 – Bold Compassion

Read Mark 2:1-17

Jesus is definitely not afraid to ruffle feathers and go against what is expected for someone who teaches and heals. We should do a better job at being bold witnesses of our faith in Jesus. Watching Jesus’ examples and how he lived his life can give us clues for how we should be interacting with others.

Jesus wasn’t afraid of what people might think. He knew his mission, and he proceeded with boldness. He not only healed, but he also forgave. We’re only two chapters into the gospel of Mark, and already we see frustrated religious leaders. They are so focused on the law that they can’t see God in their midst. Matthew 26:26-29 – Jesus Will Meet Us There

Read Matthew 26:26-29

Do you watch “The Chosen” television show yet? The scene depicted in our reading is played out in Season 5, episode 6. How do I know? I just watched this episode in preparation for our Youth Group viewing this week. The Chosen is a great depiction of the life of Jesus. It’s exciting to hear all about how many lives are being changed by God for those watching that series. You can watch it for free in The Chosen app.

The setting was in an upper room. Jesus was gathered with his dearest friends and followers for the Passover meal. This would be Jesus’ last meal with them. Jesus knew what was coming, but the disciples did not fully understand. All these thousands of years later, we still do not fully understand what had to happen with Jesus or the Kingdom of God, where Jesus will again meet us. Psalm 77 – Seek the LORD

Read Psalm 77

If you’re a fan, like me, of “The Chosen” television series about the life of Jesus and his followers, then you may remember this psalm from the last episode of Season 3. The depiction of Asaph presenting this psalm to King David was masterfully woven into the episode. I wanted to share some of my reflections on this psalm with you, as well as a few “spoilers” to connections seen in that final episode of the season.

Having just read the Book of Job together here on the blog makes this psalm even more powerful, doesn’t it? The psalmist is crying out to God from his despair much like I imagine Job did. As you read this psalm, imagine there is an acapella choir chanting eerily in the distance. At each “interlude” there is a break in the words for those voices to swell in lament and reverence to God. Ezekiel 20:1-26 – Obedience Gives Life

Read Ezekiel 20:1-26

What surprised you more—that leaders of Israel came to God for answers or that God refused to give them what they wanted? We’re not told who these men were or what their agenda really was. But Ezekiel was faithful and expected God to respond.

God’s response was more of a rebuke, putting those Israelites in their place. Just in case those leaders weren’t familiar with what had happened centuries before, they were now informed. It never ceases to amaze me how many chances God gave his rebellious people. Our human frailty would not have allowed us to be as patient. Continue reading “Ezekiel 20:1-26 – Obedience Gives Life”
