Job 3:1-26 – Job’s First Speech

Read Job 3:1-26

Job is silent no more. What a series of laments! My heart just breaks for Job, doesn’t yours? Yet in all his woes, Job never curses God. Satan thought for sure that this catastrophic loss would be enough to push Job to blame and curse God. Job focuses more on himself and his own existence.

Job didn’t even think of taking his own life. Do you think it was because he saw himself as God’s creation? In this moment, he merely wishes he had never been born in the first place. If he didn’t exist, certainly, then there would be no pain. Continue reading “Job 3:1-26 – Job’s First Speech”

Malachi 4:1-6 – Judgment Day

Read Malachi 4:1-6

This is the last chapter of the Old Testament. That fact alone gives me goosebumps as I write this reflection. There will be a huge gap of time (400 years or so) between this writing and the New Testament. The people would have to wait a long time to see some of these prophecies fulfilled.

This prophecy would have given the faithful hope for the future. Like today, there were those obedient to God and his decrees in Malachi’s day. The unfaithful probably turned the other way and ignored Malachi altogether, in denial of their coming peril. People still refuse to listen to God’s word. This prophecy is no exception.

Deuteronomy 28:15-68 – Doom and Gloom

Read Deuteronomy 28:15-68

I could have broken this passage up into several days to have a shorter reading, but I decided that with all the doom and gloom in our present day world, we’d only spend one day focusing on these curses. It would be easy to just skim over this section believing that we are immune. After all, didn’t Jesus come to save us? We’ll look at Paul’s words from Galatians 3, too.

Imagine you were the one hearing Moses declare all of these curses. What would you have been feeling? Would the fear of God be boiling inside you? Would you believe it or think that Moses had lost his mind? God was more than serious and whether or not we feel the message is for us or not, we need to seek understanding.
