Read Philippians 4:15-23

As Paul concludes his letter, you would expect him to wish his friends well. And he does, a couple times, in fact. But Paul also seeks God’s additional blessing on them for their financial faithfulness in supporting his mission.

When we give out of love or admiration for a ministry, probably the last thing on our minds is, “what’s in it for me?” Do you think the Philippians’ generosity was motivated by an expectation of recognition? I don’t think so. But Paul wanted them to know that he had noticed and was blessed by their continued support for him.

If you’ve ever been supported financially in a ministry, you know the depth of gratitude Paul was feeling. Seeing your own visions playing out because of the financial faithfulness of others is very sweet indeed. In those hard times when funds are low, fear can creep in only to be banished when God’s provision comes through again and again.

Paul hopes for his friends the same blessing of provision he has enjoyed. His statement is bold and sure. “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” That was the extra, unexpected blessing the Philippians were left with as Paul concludes his letter.

When you support your church or other servant ministry, what do you seek or expect to happen? Do you give joyfully, or do you expect some sort of return? It often comes down to our giving attitude.

Paul tells another audience in 2 Corinthians 9:7-8, “You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’ And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.”

What a promise to inspire the desire to give with a cheerful heart! We can be confident God is providing for us! It may just happen that you’ll receive an unexpected blessing, too, for your faithful giving. Remember that giving isn’t just financial.

Think of ways you can give of yourself to someone in need today.

Let’s pray … Lord, you are so good, and your faithfulness endures forever. Thank you for the reminder to be cheerful in my giving and appreciative of all the blessings you have given me. Help me to make wise decisions in my giving so I can help as many people as possible. Thank you for how you are using my gifts and talents to draw people closer to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
