“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
This is one of my all-time favorite verses. I have claimed this verse as truth for many years and on many occasions. It’s even on my Bible cover. A children’s song called “I Can” resonates in my head, which helps kiddos remember this verse. More on that in a moment!
Context (Philippians 4:10-20): This verse is one of the ones people, like me, like to memorize, but the context may change the meaning. Paul is thanking the Philippians for their monetary gifts and support, and during his acknowledgment, he speaks of his own challenges as a missionary for Christ. What a powerful testimony of finding blessing in whatever season of life he lives in and pointing to God’s involvement in his life.
We may find ourselves in a season of plenty or need. No matter the circumstance, we should stand firm on the promise of God’s provision. In this case, Paul reminds us the gift is God’s strength. We need to remember God’s power is always available to us. We are never abandoned. Perhaps we need to do a better job of asking and being in conversation with God.
Paul does not take credit for his purpose in life, which may include successes and failures. Paul points to Jesus and the promise always available. Paul does quantify that he can do “everything” with Christ’s help. Have you ever imagined such abundance for yourself?
It’s easy to look at a task or assignment and say, “I can’t.” But how much do we miss out on if we don’t take a chance, get out of our comfort zones, and allow God to give us the strength? We need to expect God to move when we do His will and live out our God-given purpose. That type of expectation aids in our confidence and strength.
Never forgetting where our strength comes from is this verse’s great reminder. Our strength comes from God. Paul’s strength came from God, too, to help him in his ministry.
If you know about Paul’s missionary journeys, you know about the times he spent in prison, shipwrecked, and fighting with non-believers. As a missionary myself, I know the risks from hearing about the fate of colleagues around the world. It’s obviously still dangerous to preach the gospel. But God gives us the strength to do his will.
So, remember that children’s song I mentioned? Here are some great lyrics to take with you today. You can make up your own melody, or simply chant it to yourself when you’re feeling weak. “I can, I can, I can (pause) do all things (pause) through Christ who gives me strength.” Repeat 7 times, taking a deep breath in between.
Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for how you fill me with the strength of your Spirit at just the right moment. Forgive me for thinking small and not trusting you to move those mountains. I love that I am safe with you, empowered with the confidence of your power working in my life. I can do so much with your help. I want to do a better job of letting go of my own will to make way for yours. Thank you for your patience with me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
