Matthew 18:20 – When Jesus is Present

“For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18:20)

Have you ever left an empty chair on purpose during a group meeting or gathering? Sometimes having the visual reminder that Jesus is here with us can be helpful. There are plenty of other times that I picture Jesus by my side, whether there’s an empty chair or not. It’s comforting and empowering.

Context (Matthew 18:15-20): This verse falls amidst an interesting discussion about what to do when you have a problem with another believer. I get the impression that Jesus intends for us to try and handle our differences face-to-face. If that doesn’t work, take witnesses along to help mediate, with the final audience being the church, should the problem not resolve. In this situation, then, Jesus assures us with this verse that he will be part of the reconciliation process.

That context puts a different spin on what I originally thought this verse was talking about. How wonderful that Jesus gives us insight on how to solve problems between believers. I can think of many instances in the church where Jesus’ counsel would have been helpful. Instead, misunderstandings and problems fester rather than being resolved, as Jesus teaches here.

Having the assurance that Jesus wants to be part of our gatherings is quite a privilege. He may have promised an audience during our times of conflict, but I’m confident it’s just what Jesus does. He likes to spend time with us when we are meeting “in his name.” That’s how other translations handle the part about meeting “as my followers.” Churches are an example of this kind of gathering, as are Bible studies, worship team rehearsals, committee meetings, classrooms, and even homes.

Tonight, we’ll have a houseful of teenage girls over for youth group. In our gathering of followers, how cool is it to imagine Jesus sitting in? This verse could be a theme verse to help our students center themselves and be ready for a touch from the Holy Spirit. We all sit up straighter in our chairs if we think Jesus is in the room.

Think of all the interactions you have during a typical week. Are any of those gatherings with other Christ followers? If so, the next time you meet, imagine Jesus there. See if it changes the dynamic or how much you enjoy the gathering.

Don’t let this verse confuse you to thinking that Jesus is only with you when you are with other people. Our individual encounters with Jesus are personal to us. We all experience and live our faith differently. Jesus wants a personal relationship with each of us, aside from any other group involvement.

I trust you to help me work it out in a way that benefits all. Right now I feel a little depleted but on the edge of something amazing. I trust you are leading the way and orchestrating our every move. Thank you for loving us all. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
