Numbers 31:1-54 – Conquest of the Midianites

Read Numbers 31:1-54

I’m not sure this victory is the legacy that Moses was wanting as one of his last duties as God’s leader of the Israelites. As I understand it, there are details in this account that don’t fit with reality or seem over the top in terms of the sheer amounts recorded. When we encounter difficult texts like this, it’s best to take a step back and see what God’s message is for us today despite all of those “distractions.”

So what do we see as messages from God in this reading? One I see fits with God’s character as he reveals himself and his desire for his people to have the best opportunity for success. The Midianites were the enemy in terms of distracting people from God and “leading them into idolatry.” This would be a clear violation of God’s desire for us to put him first. Without trusting God 100%, the people would not have that “best” opportunity available to them.

The Midianites were not “in the way” physically of their entering the Promised Land, because the Israelites are already camped on the shares of the Jordan River. This holy war was God’s attempt to cleanse the people before they enter the Promised Land. The Midianites were guilty of being a bad influence, and God eliminated them hoping their influence would be forgotten.

The fact that not a drop of Israelite blood was shed seems a bit unrealistic but then the power of God should never be underestimated. Do you ever question God or his intentions? Someone just asked me if I could see God moving along the way to bring me to this season of life. I don’t think I ever imagined how God would be using me one day. I have been preparing for my ministry today since I was seven years old,. I just didn’t understand how God was orchestrating all the teachable moments.

We should never put limits on God or his power to accomplish what he wants. That’s a message I see in this passage. We may not always understand God’s motivations, but they will always point back to his faithfulness and love. He wants us to be in a relationship with him so he can equip us for service.

Don’t resist what the Lord may be offering you. Take the plunder and be grateful. God’s provisions are always abundantly sufficient. If you are feeling weak, turn in and focus on God. If you’re feeling lost, let the light of God’s word illuminate your path.

The final takeaway for me is Moses’ obedience and how he enforced God’s desires. Can you imagine what it was like to facilitate such a conquest knowing your death is just right around the corner? Moses acted and showed respect to the LORD’s directions. The people were given clear leadership directives for how to handle this war before, during, and after. Adjustments were made as needed.

What adjustments need to be made in your life to open you up a little more to allow God to lead?

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. Lord, thank you for always looking out for me, no matter what. You know my weaknesses, and yet you stand strong to guide and protect me. Thank you for not giving up on me even when I’m disobedient. As I serve you, may I always set a good example for others. Help me to set aside my agenda and be all in for yours.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
