“For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18:20)
What a great promise Jesus makes for us in this verse. I don’t know how many times I’ve quoted this when in a small group, or attending a meeting when only a few people show up. How comforting to know Jesus is there. Have you ever set an empty seat out in his honor?
Context: This verse is nestled in a section of chapter 18 where Jesus is addressing conduct between believers. Jesus gave great counsel to what to do when we don’t see eye to eye with other believers. Earlier in the chapter Jesus uses the parable of the lost sheep and talks about becoming like children in terms of the purity of our faith.
How do you feel knowing that Jesus is present as part of your small group of believers? Of course, it can be a little daunting on the one hand wanting everything to be perfect with Jesus as a guest. I think of Martha scurrying about as she prepared for her dinner party with Jesus and her siblings. It can also be reassuring because Jesus brings peace and truth.
Immediately preceding this great verse, Jesus speaks of being in agreement with each other. “If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.” When we find ourselves in synch with other believers, our own faith is strengthened. From the promise here, that unity of mind will get God’s attention to respond favorably.
Verse 20 also suggests that our meetings with other believers need not be grand arena-filled gatherings. Intimate meetings between a few friends is enough to ensure that Jesus shows up. This helped me a lot when we went from a church of 1,000 attendees to less than 100. The dynamic of a smaller group is much different, but Jesus was no less present.
What does matter is our intent. Meeting as Jesus’ followers, or “in Jesus’ name” as other translations read, is essential. The common bond we have with others is Jesus, and he should always be the focus. Even though we cannot see him, we can still look to his will and guidance. That’s what meeting in this way signifies for me.
Don’t fret if you are the only one that shows up for a meeting. Some would question if Jesus was really there. That’s not the intention of this verse, so don’t get caught in the weeds. We know when we pray, Jesus is there listening. A group of one simply means you’ve got one-on-one time with your best friend, Jesus.
Let’s pray. Lord, your presence is everywhere, and I love to always imagine you by my side. Thank you for this promise to be in our midst when we meet in your name. May I always honor you and look to you for guidance. Forgive me for times I’ve sinned and displeased you. You never gave up on me. Thank you for always helping me when I lean into you and trust your ways. Help me in communicating well with other believers. Use me to be an encouraging servant. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
