Mark 4:21-41 – Listen Up!

Jesus calms the storm

Read Mark 4:21-41

A lot is happening in this reading. First, Jesus teaches with more parables. Then, one of the greatest lessons is taught by simply by watching Jesus’ actions in the middle of a wild storm. What are some of your takeaways from this reading?

We’ve heard several times in the midst of these parables that “[a]nyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.” We also know that some truths remain hidden until Jesus feels the time is right for us to understand. Jesus tells us quite plainly that when we listen and pay attention to his teaching, understanding will be given. Such wisdom is surely a gift we should not take for granted!

Two of the parables speak about the Kingdom of God. Don’t worry if the meaning is still a little unclear. What we learn here and from other Biblical references to the kingdom is that it is where God reigns. The mustard seed example suggests that the kingdom will grow as it expands with believers who trust in King Jesus. The farmer example suggests that growing closer to Jesus is a process. Our faith journey’s destination is the eternal Kingdom of God.

The final part of this reading, though not a parable, is equally important for us to pay attention to. What did you notice? Were you more surprised that Jesus could sleep through a raging storm or that he called out his disciples for having little or no faith? Perhaps, like the disciples, you were amazed by the storm’s response to Jesus’ rebuke.

Why did Jesus question their faith? Certainly, being on a boat tossing and turning in the midst of a storm had to be scary. The disciples may have overreacted though, accusing Jesus of not caring if they all perish. In the moment of panic, we often say and do things that don’t make sense.

I think the story has a much deeper meaning for us to grasp. What happens when we encounter “storms” in our own life? Don’t we frantically worry or try to fix these problems by ourselves? We waste precious time in panic mode.

Instead, Jesus suggests having faith in Him. We see how quickly Jesus calmed the violent storm. How much more quickly can Jesus diffuse the problems and struggles we face when we give him a chance? We don’t need to face life’s challenges alone. That’s what this example says to me.

Take time today to marvel at Jesus’ power in the world, in your life. Look at creation, at the miracle of existence, at how perfectly God’s Word speaks to your fears and concerns. Take time to be still and just listen to all the sounds that fill the air space around you. Even in the silence, there is something to listen to, even if it is only your own heartbeat.

I am so grateful you have rescued me and set my feet on the firm foundation of your truth. Continue to reveal to me the messages in Scripture as I am ready. Prepare my heart to listen and be open to your leading. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
