Mark 4:1-20 – Check the Soil

Read Mark 4:1-20

“Once again,” are the words Mark writes as he begins this story. Mark’s gospel is such a great collection of stories telling us about Jesus’ life and how he interacted with the world. Mark’s style of writing doesn’t necessarily follow a strict timeline, so enjoy every story as it unfolds.

Jesus loved to preach with parables, but his meaning was often hidden. He even tells us why in this reading. Thankfully, Jesus shared the meaning with his disciples so we, too, can understand and appreciate the real-life examples. This parable is one of my favorites, although I probably say that about most of them.

Have you ever planted a garden or spread grass seed in your yard? I’m sure your thoughts went dashing back to those moments, picturing exactly how some seeds were successful and others dried up and died. Without this masterful story from Jesus connecting the dots for us, I would have never thought about God’s word being like seeds.

What this teaches me is that the soil matters. When and where we share the Good News about Jesus or other truths from God’s word is important. Sometimes the soil needs preparation to be ready to accept. Timing can make the difference between whether or not God’s message is received or trampled on.

How is your own soil? Are you eagerly waiting for each new message and revelation from God? Or does the busyness of life get in the way of truly connecting with God’s word? You wouldn’t plant a garden in a bed of weeds or plant an oak tree on sand. Jesus’ examples are quite telling, aren’t they?

How brilliantly this example shows why some people cling to God’s word and others are oblivious or even indignant to the truth. It’s all about our soil. In other words, how open is our heart to hearing God’s word, accepting some hard lessons, and living our lives to please God?

The word of God is meant to be shared, just like seeds are sown to produce crops for our nourishment. The sustenance we receive from God’s truth can carry us through many of life’s difficult situations. I am continually amazed at the messages I find in God’s word that comfort and direct. Make note in your Bible of these “a-ha” moments when you come across them.

So how are you doing at being a “sower of the seed?” Are you sharing the word of God with others? Do you check their soil first to see how open they are to receiving God’s blessings? Some easy ways to prepare the hearts of others are to share your own before and after story involving the truth of God’s word. Nobody can take that experience away from you. Authenticity is key to building trust, which can help cultivate the soil right before your eyes.

When we first start reading Scripture and the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to the truth, it’s a beautiful thing. The mystery or secret is revealed. Why, then, do we want to keep all of that to ourselves?

I want others to experience your life-changing presence as well. Use me to do your will. Direct my steps and show me the way. You are great and worthy to be praised. Accept my worship and devotion. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
