Right on the heels of Jesus’ miracle of feeding 5,000 people, we have another. Jesus walked on water. How often have we used that phrase, “walked on water” to signify that someone is holy or set apart? We are definitely seeing God’s power, the wind of the Holy Spirit, and Jesus, all present at this moment. There is a fancy word for that, theophany. There are similar accounts in two of the other Gospels. John’s version is the shortest, I believe.
We hear Jesus’ words of comfort, “Do not be afraid.” I’m not sure what would make the disciples more afraid, the tossing around of the boat in the wind and waves or seeing their friend walking on water. People usually don’t walk on water. Why were they surprised? After all, they just had seen Jesus multiply the loaves and fish. Why should walking on water be that difficult?
In John’s version of the story, the disciples were very eager to get Jesus in the boat. At once, the boat then arrived at their destination. This is an interesting little twist that the others don’t mention. Another miracle transporting their boat from the gales and storm to the other side of the lake. It must have made quite an impression on John.
For us, we might sense immediate relief or resolution to a problem once we finally allow our faith in Jesus to be in control. I’ve heard it said that faith is a mindset that expects God to act. When we are in the midst of a problem or crisis, rather than be afraid or caught up in worry, we need to turn to our faith and expect God to be there.
Can you remember a time when you were a wit’s end over something and then prayed? Do you remember the peace that flowed over you? Here’s a very simple example. I have been known to misplace an item, let’s say my keys. Once I have looked everywhere and exhausted every possibility of where they might be, I pray. I ask God to show me where they are. You know how this is going to end. I find my keys. So, why don’t I ask God FIRST before spending all that time running around trying to find them myself?
What struck you about this Bible passage today? Were you waiting for Peter to get out of the boat and walk with Jesus? If you’ve read the other gospels, Peter does get out of the boat with Jesus. I was reminded recently of the movie “The Shack” where the main character (Mack) was walking on water with Jesus. Watch the scene HERE.
A little later in the film, when feeling a little bold, Mack tried to do it without Jesus by his side. He immediately sank (like Peter). Mack was reminded he needed to rely on Jesus’ presence for that! Jesus wants us all to be crystal clear that he loves us and willing to rely on him at all times. He is our best friend.
Let’s pray. Lord, I am again amazed by you and how you reveal yourself to us. Thank you for all you are doing in my life to help me grow closer to you. May I do a better job of not trying to do everything myself. I need you every hour for every task. I call upon you today to rule in my heart and mind. May I be a blessing to those I encounter. May people see you in me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
