John 4:27-54 – Coming to Faith

Read John 4:27-54

Did you notice how many people came to faith because of one woman’s testimony? We’re not given an exact number, but it’s impressive how God uses us all to grow His Kingdom. We each have a special story that tells of how Jesus has changed our lives. Our encounters may not be dramatic, but their impact can be life-changing. You never know when your story will resonate with someone who needs to hear it.

It sounds like the disciples were a little confused by what had happened while they were busy gathering food. Jesus’ ministry had taken an unexpected turn from their perspective. And then Jesus started talking about food and harvesting. “You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true.”

Jesus is talking about our mission to disciple others to know Him. The one who plants is the one who teaches and gives real-life examples about Jesus’ love and interaction in this world. The harvester is present when a person who has heard all the things finally accepts Jesus’ call on their life. That saying does not mention all the “waterers” along the way who have nurtured those seeds of faith that were planted. What role do you play most frequently?

It’s hard for us to fathom the miracle that happened in that Samaritan village. Jews and Samaritans were not on the best of terms due to a longstanding rivalry. These transformations not only changed the lives of those who accepted Jesus as their Savior, but also for the Jewish disciples who realized that Jesus’ love and mission included everyone. That had to really rock their world. It does us good to remember Jesus loves the WHOLE world.

Another real example of coming to faith happens to the government official whom Jesus encounters back in Galilee. That’s a great example for us that Jesus doesn’t have to be physically present for miracles of healing to take place. The man never professes his faith directly; however, his plea for Jesus’ help shows he believes in Jesus’ healing power.

Even though Jesus seemed a little put out with this man, he offered healing. Jesus’ harshness with this man was probably because many people Jesus encountered seemed to need a sign or wonder first to believe. This man, probably from King Herod’s court, took that rebuke for the rest.

Do you think the man was surprised when he found his son was healed at the exact moment Jesus promised healing? I can imagine his walk back home had to be filled with anticipation since it says he believed. Having been a desperate parent, I can imagine the rejoicing and overwhelming sense of gratitude when reality hit. If only Jesus had been there is that moment of realization, the father would have embraced him in a grateful hug.

What healing touch do you seek from Jesus today? Ask Jesus to show his mercy. Are you waiting for a miracle in your life to truly believe in Jesus’ redeeming love and healing power? Remember Jesus’ words to Thomas later in John 20:29, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. Lord Jesus, I believe you are the giver and perfecter of life. Everything that I have has come from you. My gratitude overflows when I think of your love and mercy. It seems like I have known you my whole life, and yet my coming to faith renews each time I meet with you in prayer and see you moving in this world. Continue to guide my steps and forgive me each time I lose my way. Draw me closer, Lord, to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
