John 14:1-14 đź’— Jesus is the Way

Read John 14:1-14

Even Jesus’ own disciples couldn’t see the whole picture. Admittedly, it’s a big ask to accept that seeing a man, their friend, means they’ve seen God. That’s why it can be hard for us, who have not spent weeks and years in Jesus’ physical presence, to wrap our minds around the fact that Jesus is God.

This whole scene takes place on Jesus’ last night with his friends. It’s like he’s trying to pack everything into his last few hours. So much is about to happen that will totally rock their world, their faith. Jesus is doing all he can to help them, and us, be ready for the onslaught of the world’s lies and deception.

Our new theme for the week is salvation, forgiveness, and new life. I’m sure Jesus forgave his disciples for their hard headedness. He wanted desperately for them to trust him as their salvation and way to new life. He forgives us for our doubting minds, too. What are some of the verses that ring out to you today?

The following is always good advice, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.” This verse is good for any time we’re facing hardship or struggle. Over the past week in my own life, as I have been fighting the battle with COVID, trusting in Jesus to rescue my husband and I has been about all I have the energy to do! It’s been an amazing journey of trust, and I wouldn’t have wanted to walk through this without Jesus by my side.

I know there have been plenty of people, sick or not, who have not had this peace of mind during the pandemic. Like the disciples, they aren’t sure of the way. It is my prayer for them that they discover the truth. Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” How can we get this message out? There are many people searching for new life, new beginnings. If only they knew Jesus!

I can’t imagine Jesus’ frustration with his followers that night. It brought tears to my eyes to think of how blind we can all be to the truth at times. How many times is Jesus right there in front of us in some way, in a sunset, in a smile from a stranger, in a text from a friend? I can just imagine how Jesus has tried to get my attention over the years and I’ve simply not seen.

I am convicted by this line Jesus spoke. “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.” What does that mean for you? As believers, we need to be doing the same works as Jesus. Healing. Loving others. Showing compassion. What greater works can there be than what Jesus did? That is something to reflect on, don’t you agree?

Let’s pray. Father, thank you for walking with me each day. Forgive me when I don’t see you or acknowledge your presence. Impress on my heart the ways you want me to impact this world. Help me be compassionate and loving like you, seeing the needs where they are. Empower me to serve like you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
