Isaiah 50:1-11 – Blame or Boast?

Read Isaiah 50:1-11

Relationships can be destroyed when we play the “blame game.” That is when we look at where we are and take no responsibility for it because we find it easier to blame someone else. For instance, I could say that I’m afraid of spiders because my mother was afraid of spiders. Now that’s a simplistic example, but you get the idea. If we’re not blaming another person, we may be blaming a situation.  Why is it we never want to admit our faults but cover them up with some sort of deception?

Our text today opens with the Lord trying to uncover the reasons or excuses people were using to drift away from him into sinful behaviors. Why were they blaming him for something he didn’t do? God is quick to remind us that he is all powerful and all knowing.

We’re given a great example in verses 4 and following. If you’ve ever wondered how to handle a situation or been afraid you’ll say the wrong thing, let this wash over you. “The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will.” Isn’t that a beautiful promise?

On many occasions when facing a difficult conversation, I have asked the Lord to give me the words to say. I am always amazed at the words that tumble out of my mouth. I have often thought to myself, “I sound good!” I then realize I need to be boasting about God. He is the one speaking through me so eloquently! If you haven’t done this before, you should really try it. This is especially helpful in those faith-based questions or when the solution needed is faith and trust.

It’s so much healthier to boast in the Lord than to focus on failure. We are given the choice on how to react to the “learning activities” we encounter in our lives. Like the author, “I have not rebelled or turned away.” Recently, at least. There have been plenty of times in my life when I have been a little rebellious as you know! But I so much prefer the feeling of being close to God, grounded in Scripture, and being equipped to serve.

“Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his servant? If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God.” If we are totally honest with ourselves, we may realize we are still walking in darkness. If we are allowing the circumstances of life to overshadow the beauty of Christ and what he has done for us, we are still in the dark. It’s never too late to rely on God and trust in him. That can be a huge leap of faith!

It’s time to stop making excuses. What is holding you back from the relationship God desires with you is you. God is waiting patiently. It is so much healthier to boast in the Lord rather than wallow in excuses blaming our lot in life or some other person or thing.

Take time to reconnect with God today on a deeper level. Ask him to speak to your heart. Sit quietly. Listen.

Let’s pray … Lord, I am listening for you today. Help me to set aside all the reasons or lies I tell myself that are holding me back. Help me to sort through the clutter in search of your truth and your will for me. Forgive me for my impatience in the process. Guard my heart from the negativity in the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
