Holy Week 2020 – Tuesday

Read Matthew 26:6-13 and John 12:1-8

How did Jesus spend his last days? All these years later, what do his final words say to us? We have entered into Holy Week. In pastoral ministry over the years, this has been one of the busiest weeks of the year. Easter morning would often arrive and the week before would seem only a blur of preparations. How can you celebrate the resurrection joy when you haven’t taken time to feel the agony and desperation of Jesus’ final hours?

This year, in 2020, the whole world has been given a notice to isolate, to “socially distance” from co-workers, friends, neighbors, and loved ones. No church gatherings will take place. There are plenty of people feeling the agony of loss and the desperation of the unknown. Yet for this week, I want us all to try and focus on Jesus. Let’s set aside the craziness of the world’s events and just be in the presence of Jesus. Walk with him in his final days. Feel his passion. Sense his strength. Hear his promise that death has no power.

I’ve chosen two similar texts for us to meditate on today. This story was actually recorded in all four gospels. (See Mark and Luke). Don’t let the differences stop you from seeing the beautiful message for us today. The extravagance of faith displayed in this story has always spoken to me. This woman, Mary by John’s account, was so moved by Jesus and how he had changed her life. So much so, she freely poured expensive perfume all over him.

This is not necessarily a cultural tradition we understand so well today. To anoint is often part of a religious ceremony or to set someone apart for recognition. In all of the Gospels, those watching were aghast at what just happened. They criticized the woman because this perfume was expensive, and now it has just been wasted. But had it?

Jesus was quick to defend this woman. He was touched by her affection. Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” It’s true. Jesus’ time on earth was drawing to a close. His disciples didn’t quite understand what Jesus had been telling them about what would happen when they got to Jerusalem. Whether this woman knew the story or not, she had been moved to give of herself.

How have you given to Jesus lately? Does he get your left overs or does he get your best? We may find ourselves in an awkward position this year when it comes to reaching out “physically” to others. Yet, we can connect with Jesus any which way. We can devote an entire day to sitting quietly in his presence. What does being extravagant look like to you in terms of your faith journey?

Let’s pray. Lord forgive me for ever doubting you or how you served others. May my faith be extravagant like the woman who spared no expense to show you her devotion. She left her mark on you and on history. May I never be afraid of what others will think or say when it comes to showing I belong to you. Give me that boldness to to take chances for you. Help me to keep my eyes focused on you and your great sacrifice for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
