“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” (Hebrews 4:16)
I wonder how many people think about the day when they will approach the throne of God. Instead, we focus on the life God has given us, just trying to get by each day. It can be struggle enough to just be “present” in our lives and not always worried about the next thing, like what’s for dinner.
Context (Hebrews 4:14-16) We learn that Jesus is our High Priest, and that’s significant. High priests were traditionally the only ones who could approach God in the temple. The Holy of Holies was God’s dwelling place among men. We can all imagine Jesus in the presence of God, he is God. But our memory verse says that we, too, can approach the throne of God just like Jesus.
The verse says to approach “boldly.” There should be no hesitation if we are confident. Jesus has made a way for us, making it possible to seek God in a way generations before were not able. We should have nothing to fear because God is “gracious.” He is waiting to welcome us.
Sometimes we get a picture of God that he is distant and not to be disturbed. We may feel like God must have abandoned us, otherwise this or that wouldn’t be happening. This verse helps us remember the opposite is true. God stands ready to welcome us with his mercy and grace in the here and now, not just when he welcomes us home.
Phil Wickham has a new song coming out soon called “Homesick for Heaven.” As one of his “followers,” he’s given us a sneak peek, and these lyrics are powerful. Another song of Phil’s that really resonates with me when I think of being face to face with Jesus is called “Hymn of Heaven.” You can listen here.
We don’t need to wait another day. The invitation to come boldly is on this side of the grave, too. Jesus, as High Priest, has given us access to the Father. Grace is waiting there for us. The great promise of this verse is that grace, our Jesus, stands ready to help us when “we need it most.”
Approaching the throne of God doesn’t need to intimidate us. Our sinful, dark side has never been hidden from God. We have nothing to fear. Our God is merciful, and we will “receive his mercy.”
Let’s pray. Lord, you are all-knowing and all-powerful, and yet you love me. I look forward to that day when we will meet face to face. Until that day, I want to come boldly before you, unafraid and unashamed, ready to receive your mercy. Thank you for always looking out for me, no matter what. You know my weaknesses, and yet you stand strong to guide and protect me. Thank you for never giving up on me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
