I don’t care how shrewd Laban may be, his daughters and grandchildren had vanished. There was no other choice but to set off in pursuit. As the days passed trying to catch up to them, imagine how his anger was brewing. What had started as concern over a secret departure had now escalated to anger. We see God intervene once again to protect Jacob.
What did you think of the whole negotiation? Both men were surely stubborn and aggressive. Yet there was no bloodshed. In fact, they played rather nice as they devised a treaty that would protect both of them. I don’t know about you, but I sure held my breath when it came to finding the gods Rachel had taken. Jacob’s sentence of death to the one who took them would have crushed him had they found the truth and followed through. Rachel was thankfully a couple of steps ahead in her plan.
So how are you when it comes to confrontation? Do you avoid it at all costs and hope the dispute just goes away? Or are you more like Laban and zealously seek out your adversary to make a scene? How do you think this would have played out if God hadn’t intervened?
Sometimes we are put in situations where we have to play nice. Maybe we have neighbors that are infuriating. Maybe we have children who are disobedient. Maybe it’s a co-worker who seems to get preferential treatment taking credit for what you have done. We will face circumstances in life that frustrate us and cause stress.
I’m not sure that our model of fleeing from the fear is the best thing, but when confronted, play nice. You never know what is going on with someone else. Maybe they have had a bad day. Maybe they are struggling with something they are keeping deep inside. Perhaps the hurtful things they say aren’t directed at you at all, you just happen to be in the “right” place and the wrong time.
As children of God, we are called to be the shining light, to be the peacemaker in a situation. If you are not feeling particularly “bright” or “peaceful,” remember whose you are. Remember what Jesus has done for you. When you bring to mind the gift of grace that has been so freely given to you, you will be refreshed and able to play nice.
Here is a great song, “This Is Amazing Grace” – listen HERE.
Let’s pray. Lord, I thank you for your grace and power. I do stand breathless with awe that you took my place. When I am feeling threatened or overwhelmed, help me to rest in this truth. It will carry me through any storm I may face. You are my strong tower. You are the one who ignites me to be your light. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
