Read Ezekiel 26:1-21
We have another time stamp for this prophecy. It’s approximately three years after Nebuchadnezzar began his siege in Jerusalem. In fact, the next couple chapters will focus on God’s will or plans for Tyre. For context, Tyre would be located in present day Lebanon.
Similar to the Ammonites, the nation of Tyre scoffed at the destruction of Judah. They took it a step farther claiming they would be the heirs now. God was not pleased with them and their boasting. The Sovereign Lord said, “I will bring many nations against you, like the waves of the sea crashing against your shoreline.”
God did use Nebuchadnezzar’s army to siege Tyre and this prophecy speaks to the destruction in great detail. In the end, Tyre would no longer exist. Just as the LORD said, “You will have no place of respect here in the land of the living. I will bring you to a terrible end, and you will exist no more.” Tyre no longer exists.
Ezekiel had been given great insights into how God’s fury would play out beyond what had happened in Jerusalem. The LORD wanted to be known in that region. I see God’s vengeance on all who rebel or disrespect God. Why does the Bible give us such clear pictures of destruction?
God used these many nations to do his bidding. If God used his enemies and rivals in the past, is he still doing so today? Sometimes we wonder why certain things happen or why some people seem to have more power and authority than they deserve. Do you think God has a hand in these situations?
God can use anyone he pleases to complete his will on earth. Proverbs 16:4 says, “The Lord has made everything for his own purposes, even the wicked for a day of disaster.” In the Lord’s Prayer, we petition for God’s will to be done here on earth as in heaven. We’re asking God to reveal himself and his plans for us and the world. We trust he will in his perfect time.
We never want to be like Tyre and the nations who angered God. Instead, we choose to trust God and what he provides for us. Hebrews 13:21 has a beautiful prayer, “may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.”
Let’s pray. LORD, you are so powerful and mighty. Your wisdom knows no end. Reveal yourself to me in your word so that I can be on the path that follows you. Thank you for how you equip me to do your will. I want to live a life pleasing to you. I trust in your provisions and look forward to seeing how you will use me today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
