Daniel 4:1-18 – Dreaming of a Tree

Read Daniel 4:1-18

A second dream! I suppose when you’re good at something that glorifies God you talk about it. We get the first part of the story here, but our next reading will be the big reveal. For now, we’re wondering how it will all play out.

This whole story being told by King Nebuchadnezzar is quite the proclamation! As far as was the king’s reach, people were hearing about the Most High God. “How great are his signs, how powerful his wonders! His kingdom will last forever, his rule through all generations.” How do you think Daniel and his friends reacted to such a public display?

Because the king had believed in his own plentiful array of gods, it would be a huge stretch for him to acknowledge our Most High God is the one true God. All others are not gods at all, considered “false gods” in the Bible.

Nebuchadnezzar also recognizes that Daniel is spirit-filled. He didn’t get the “language” right, but he understood the Most High God to be holy. It must have been an interesting dilemma for the king from the faith perspective. Daniel was certainly doing a good job of planting the seeds of faith by allowing God to work through him.

Little did the king realize that his faith in Daniel’s ability to make sense of this crazy tree dream was really faith in the Most High God. Daniel would be powerless without God’s wisdom. Would God choose to be revealed once again through Daniel? Of course!

Any chance we get we should be witnessing about our faith. We never know when God is going to use a situation we find ourselves in. That’s why making the most of every moment sounds so appealing. Don’t let the busyness of life be your excuse. (I used to use that one a lot!)

Some stops along life’s journey are only for a season. Be ready for that. We never know when God is going to move us around. I’ve always marveled at the people who have remained in one area their whole lives. How nice that God bloomed them surrounded by all things beautifully familiar.

Wherever God has planted you for this season, remember to let yourself bloom. Explore what God has for you.

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. LORD, you are the master of my life. Forgive me for the times when I’ve moved in the wrong direction. You always seem to correct me in some way to get my attention. Thank you for your love and guidance. May I be more open to sharing my story with others as a way of introducing them to you. I need your strength each day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
