Read Daniel 1:8-16
Daniel is being obedient to God. He didn’t let the fact that he was taken to a foreign land stop his devotion. Even though he had been plopped into a training group to work for the new kingdom, Daniel was bold enough to not “go with the flow.”
Don’t you agree that some people in a situation like Daniel would have let their faith “cave” for fear of death or torture? Daniel showed great obedience to even ask the question. “Can we eat something else?”
God must not have been surprised with Daniel’s obedience. After all, we read that “God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection for Daniel.” The LORD himself was setting Daniel up for success. I’m confident God does that type of thing for us, too.
We also have his Word to keep us on the straight path of faith and obedience. The more we learn about our majestic God and how his story has played out over the years, the more we want to know. Just this past week our pastor talked about how our desire for God only multiplies the more we spend time with him.
When we stand on our principles, based on God’s word, we can expect that God will show up for us. He showed up for Daniel even before Daniel refused the food. There must have been something in the food being offered that would have defiled Daniel and the other believers. The replacement of vegetables and water was rewarded by healthy and strong bodies.
Our bodies are important to help us worship God and serve other people. Those are our two main jobs in this life. We just happen to fill our days with lots of other activities, too.
Daniel’s life had totally changed. Each new day would be an adventure. His predicament reminds me of the story of Joseph, Jacob’s son who was sold into slavery in Egypt. Both are captives. Both are chosen and respected. Both are in a foreign land yet still remain steadfast to the one true God.
In comparison, we have it easy. Take some time today to think about what might be holding you captive. Is it your work, your relationships, your busyness? Don’t let those excuses hold you back from the beauty that comes with obedience.
Let’s pray. Father, thank you for all of the blessings I see happening around me. You are truly at work in this world, I am so grateful. Help me to be more obedient to you and mindful of how I can serve others. Open up the opportunities for me to share the gifts you have given me. Show me the lessons I need to learn as I journey closer to you each day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
