Festus was at his wit’s end at what to do with Paul. We know Paul has appealed to Caesar. Talk about going to the top for justice! But we all know Paul is not guilty of any crime punishable by Roman law. Festus knows this and wants to get the King’s input on what he should tell the emperor. If nothing else, he wants to save face and not look ridiculous for bothering the emperor himself with matters that should have been handled “in the field.”
I don’t know about you, but I love when Paul tells his story. He is so respectful to those in his presence. He is totally devoted to his mission. It’s so clear he truly wants everyone to believe as he does. I love that we all have the opportunity to receive forgiveness and be accepted into God’s family because of our faith and belief in Jesus.
The King wasn’t ready for an altar call that day. But, I would have to say that Paul’s words rocked his world. There was no denying what Paul said made sense. If true, the future just shifted, and that was overwhelming. How did the king respond? He got up and left. On his way out, he told Festus Paul was not guilty of death. Too bad he had asked to see Caesar – he could have been a free man.
Remember what God had told Paul? He was going to Rome. Paul had a ticket to Rome by asking for an audience with Caesar. How will this story unfold? How will God continue to use Paul? Don’t you love the suspense of watching God at work?
When is the last time you saw God’s hand at work in your life? Truth be told, waking up each day and seeing a new day is all God. Each day I am reminded that I am not in charge. As much as I would like to control a situation, I have to relinquish that control more times than not. I fix my eyes on Jesus and his perfect will for me. His way is so much better, why do I try to stand in the way?
Surrender. That’s the word for me today. I need to surrender to the path God has for me. The journey of faith is always taking new turns. Sometimes a U-turn is what’s necessary – also known as repentance. God’s love is chasing me and trying to get me back on track. He is searching for all of us to make sure we don’t stray too far for too long. I think of loved ones who are off-course and pray they open their hearts and surrender.
Here’s a great song that really spoke to me today. WE WON’T BE SHAKEN. Listen here.
Let’s pray. Father God, refresh my soul today. I am so thankful for all the blessings you have placed in my life. I am amazed at the sacrifice you made for me because you loved me so much. How can I ever repay you for that? I surrender to your will. Direct my feet. Speak through me. Use me to be the calming force in this whole transition. You have it all worked out, help me to let go. Thank you for the wisdom you give me and the peace that flows in abundance. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
