Acts 16:1-5 – How Bold is Your Faith?

Read Acts 16:1-5

Paul’s second missionary journey begins and we meet a very special man, Timothy. He was well thought of by the new believers, despite being of “mixed” blood, that is Jewish and Greek (Gentile). There were still tensions between Jews and Gentiles, and perhaps not everyone had heard the council’s report or decree for the young, growing church. Paul’s travels were destined to get that word out. He was about to partner with a new friend,  Timothy.

Timothy’s faith was bold. As we’ve said, up to this point, when men converted to Judaism they were expected to be circumcised to follow Jewish law and tradition. Now, with the new understanding handed down by church elders and leaders, that act was no longer necessary. However, Timothy made a statement about his devotion by doing so anyway. How have you gone above and beyond for your faith?

Paul’s ministry team has now grown by one. Paul, Silas, and Timothy are off to proclaim the good news to all. They will also be instructing Jews and Gentile believers to follow the decisions of the elders in Jerusalem. Those are two very big goals for this mission! Those are some very bold men to take on this mission knowing they will face opposition, trial, and possibly death. However, Paul, for one, has seen how God intervenes to keep the ministry alive. There is no doubt in Paul’s mind that he is doing what he has been called to do. He is fearless.

What fears are holding you back from having a deeper relationship with God? Perhaps you dig deep and feel close in prayer, but haven’t yet experienced the joy of sharing your faith with others. Now that’s where fear can certainly creep in. We don’t necessarily want to put ourselves out there for fear of what people with think, that we’ll say the wrong thing, or possibly even offend someone.

It was the same for Paul. We need to remember that. We aren’t living in times so different. Paul was facing all sorts of corruption, idolatry, sexual misconduct, and sinful behaviors, just like we face today. Did he let it stop him? Was he afraid of being “politically correct?” I think not. How bold are you? Are there people in your life that need to hear about the saving grace of Jesus Christ? What if you don’t tell them?

Let’s pray. Lord, again you have convicted me that you have placed me in this place for a reason. I have heard there are many in our area that don’t know about you, or if they have heard they don’t understand or have the whole story. Use me today, Lord, to be a shining light and a breath of fresh air to those I come into contact with. Take away any fear I may have for speaking out for you. Open up those opportunities, and keep my eyes peeled to be ready. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
