Read 1 Chronicles 19:1-19
David and his army are quite the defenders of their promised land. The skirmishes that we read about in this reading could have been avoided. David’s intentions in giving tribute to an old ally seemed legitimate. Even in David’s day, people in power misunderstood each other and took offensive action.
If only the grieving son, Hanun, had not listened to his commanders. As such, these commanders were on the ready for war, so of course every action, including David sending his sympathy, became a potential act of war. Hanun didn’t skip a beat before gathering some help to defeat David.
Did you wonder when this story took place? This text tells us this is “some time after this,” referring to what happened in our last reading. I was surprised that some of the same players make a reappearance in this attack or attempted attack against David. Our last reading also showed how, with God’s help, David became victorious against his enemies. The pattern of success continues.
Even David’s army commander, Joab, recognized God’s role in their victories. I like his comment, “May the Lord’s will be done.” He said that right after encouraging his brother before his own conquest. What a blessing and act of faithfulness on Joab’s part!
Witnessing God’s will be done is a sight to behold! Sometimes it’s only after the fact that we realize what we just saw or experienced. The thrill is still hard to describe. When you can see God’s hands on a situation, how he healed someone, how he opened up a new job at just the right time, or as he changed or softened your heart to want to seek him more.
That’s where I see God moving in this story. God is the true defender. I see him continuing to move David’s kingdom forward, growing his faith along the way. Our faith is also deepening as we encounter these testimonials.
David seeks God’s will, and so do we still today. We know God moves among his people, those who are truly seeking him. How is he moving in your little piece of this world?
Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for moving in my heart and my life. It’s so good to have you a part of each day. I am humbled by your excellence and desire to be in a relationship with me. It’s hard to fathom how much you love me and all your children at the same time. I trust you to lead me in the right direction. I am ready to follow and obey. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
