Proverbs 9:1-12 – Come to Wisdom

Read Proverbs 9:1-12

Wisdom is calling. Are you listening? I like the image of a spacious, welcoming house with seven pillars. The number seven in the Bible represents completeness and perfection. We can understand that wisdom lacks for nothing, it is complete and perfect.

Wisdom calls out to us, “Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.” I think we all want to have good judgment. Making the right decisions in life is so much easier when we exercise good judgment. But how do we begin to find wisdom so we can heed her call?

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.” Without a strong foundation a building will crumble. So, too, our lives. To fear the Lord means cultivating an attitude of reverence and awe for the Lord. Our path of wisdom begins when we get to know God and seek a relationship with him. We need not be afraid of and avoid God. It seems that true wisdom apart from God is not possible.

There are many smart people in the world. People who have spent their lives studying one thing or another and getting really good at what they do. But are they “wise?” We can draw a line in the sand here between having wisdom and knowledge and having only knowledge. We can know a lot of things and be book-smart, but if we don’t have wisdom, understanding or good judgment, we aren’t “complete” or whole.

That could be why people often describe feeling empty or like something is missing in their life. Oftentimes, their missing piece is God, a relationship with God that is. Isn’t it time to feel complete? Isn’t it time to start fresh and be who God made you to be?

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” We don’t have to worry about being judged by God for asking for something he longs to give us anyway. Wisdom is not something that is just going to fall out of the sky and land in our laps. It is from God, it is of God.

We benefit from having wisdom in our lives. There is peace when God is in our life, and we are following the path he has crafted for us. It is a path so much better than we could have ever imagined. Are you ready for that? Are you ready to step aside and let God control your life? It all starts with trust and building on a foundation of God’s truth.

Take some time today to really let this sink in. What does it change for you?

Let’s pray … Heavenly Father, you are good and mighty and full of the wisdom I want for my life. I want to walk in your ways and follow your leading. Grant me the wisdom to see what that is. Thank you for your guidance and unfailing love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
