John 11:1-16 – A Dying Friend

Read John 11:1-16

This is a difficult text. If you’ve ever had a friend or loved one who is dying, it is hard to watch them slip away. It seems we are never ready to say goodbye. As followers of Jesus, we have the hope and assurance that death is not the end. It may be the end of our relationship with that person on earth, but it is only the beginning of a new life for that person in the arms of the Savior. The mourning is ours alone.

In today’s reading, we see Jesus being given news of his dear friend’s illness and impending death. The difference here is that Jesus knows what is to happen with his friend, Lazarus. Jesus knows he doesn’t have to rush off to say his final goodbyes. Had he done so, the plan of receiving glory from the situation would not have worked. But how hard must it have been to stay away knowing his friends were in agony.

Mary and Martha were surely believers. They sent for Jesus straight away, knew where he’d be, and knew without a doubt that Jesus could save their dear brother. I’m sure they didn’t even stop to think how dangerous it would be for Jesus to return to their “neck of the woods.” (Bethany is only a short distance from Jerusalem.) The disciples, on the other hand, did object and thought Jesus was crazy for wanting to go back to where the leaders were trying to kill him.

But Thomas spoke up and showed his devotion. I believe he was speaking on behalf of all of them. They were there to support Jesus, and if Jesus said “let’s go,” they should follow him. I’m sure they were still a little unclear why Jesus should be killed in the first place. This is a good reminder for us to follow Jesus’ leading even when we are afraid or unsure of where he is taking us.

Jesus wanted to use what will unfold in the next couple of days for God’s glory and to help his disciples to see him for who he truly was. This was going to be something. Lazarus had died, and Jesus was going to “wake him up.” We, too, must remember to call upon God in our dire circumstances so he can be glorified in the positive outcome.

What circumstance are you caught in at the moment? Do you feel like you can’t breathe or are suffocating by the stress or worry? Turn it over to Jesus. Trust and watch God work.

Let’s pray. Father God, thank you for the reminder that you are in charge. Our problems seem so huge and immediate. Yet,  your timing and solutions are always perfect. Help me to rest in your peace and trust that you are working behind the scenes to make all things right. May I set all worry and concern aside. Please forgive me for my weakness. Strengthen me for your service. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
