Do you ever reach a boiling point in your anger or frustration? What happens next? For some, a punching bag is a good alternative, for others, we stuff it inside. Jesus didn’t stuff it in today’s passage. If you’ve been following along with us on our walk through the Book of Luke, you’ve seen the pattern of the religious leaders trying to trick and trap Jesus, the King of Kings, with their questions. We should all recognize it wasn’t going to happen no matter what question they posed, or who they sent to pose it! Jesus would overcome!
Likewise, find your peace!
By today’s account, Jesus has had enough. He poses a question I’m sure left people scratching their heads. In written form, we see the difference between LORD and Lord. LORD is God, and Lord is Messiah, at least according to how David is writing and how Biblical text interpreted.
Jesus isn’t questioning who he is in the line of David, as prophesied, but asking the question, “how” did it happen? The how is again forcing the people to think outside the box a little, and also not in the terms of man. It would be like me talking about a descendant of mine, long into the future, that would be Savior of the world. It is all God. God chooses who he uses for his intended purposes. More on that in a moment.
What strikes me, though, is how Jesus finally calls the kettle black, so to speak. He warns the people of the very religious leaders they have put their trust in. The leaders are finally exposed. If these leaders weren’t already furious with Jesus, now that they are ridiculed and shamed by him, their fury must be too much to contain. Jesus loved them, just as he loves us, but he had to be so disappointed with their choices and how they were taking advantage of their position of authority. God’s authority being distorted. He couldn’t keep silent.
So back to my comment on what God intends for us. Do you know how or why God has shaped you the way he has? Do you have confidence you are living the life he designed for you?
Take a moment to really reflect on this. Really search out the truth.
God has used so many unbelievable characters to do his will, don’t you think? How can you do a better job at being the disciple God has called you to be? Have you fallen down on your calling? It’s not too late. Ask God for his help.
Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, I come to you in awe of your great wisdom. I long for you to use me like so many disciples that have gone before me. For those opportunities that have come and gone, please forgive my wayward heart when I’ve been blind to your leading. Reveal to me now how you would like me to serve. I stand ready. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
