Read Mark 13:3-23

We now know how much Jesus will look out for us when troubles come. We’re given the privilege of hearing what Jesus was telling some of his closest followers. Jesus made it sound like these things were only going to happen during the disciples’ lifetimes, but the promise continues as we are facing the same opposition. There are so many gems in this reading.

Jesus speaks of the end times, as well as our times of persecution while we wait. You’ve probably heard people say “we’re in the end times” because of the earthquakes and wars going on around the globe. It’s not surprising, then, that we as Christ-followers are under attack for our faith in some parts of the world. Even churches and faith groups are under siege, as well as individuals standing for their religious rights. All have been mocked and scorned by society. It’s happening.

Jesus’ words are comforting. He encourages us to use these times of persecution as teachable moments for the world. Jesus said these times “will be your opportunity to tell them about me.” I think of faithful ones whose lives have been snuffed out for speaking truth or standing up for their faith. The Columbine student, Rachel Scott, and Charlie Kirk come to mind. Jesus wants to be known. We shouldn’t let a tragedy happen before we speak out.

How are you doing at spreading the gospel worldwide? Jesus told us, “For the Good News must first be preached to all nations.” Every person deserves to know about Jesus before the end comes. I can’t imagine my life without Jesus in it. However, many people spend their lives missing out on that relationship. We need to tell them. I treasure the astonished look on the orphan girls’ faces when they hear about how much Jesus loves them. That is such a great message to share!

When you are challenged about your faith by another, Jesus will be there to help you out. He tells us when confronted in court to trust God will give us the words to say. Jesus said it like this: “Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.” If you’re feeling unsure of what to say when confronted on the street, claim this verse and ask the Holy Spirit to fill your mouth. It’s such a surreal experience to know that what you’re saying is being given to you, brought to your mind at just the right moment, by God.

Jesus told us families and friendships would become strained due to differing belief systems. I’m seeing it up close and personal, are you? Jesus didn’t leave us unprepared. He told us that “the one who endures to the end will be saved.” I want all my friends and family in heaven with me someday, but I know that is out of my control. What I can control is having the endurance to stay true to God and his word.

We, as believers, are to be vigilant and on guard, or as this translation says, “pay attention.” We may not totally understand what Jesus is trying to warn us about, but we can be sure that we are better protected as believers. We have a future with Jesus, not simply pain, destruction, and death.

Jesus’ final warning is about those false messiahs and false prophets who fill the airwaves. Jesus tells us that these folks will deceive “even God’s chosen ones.” That’s frightening, isn’t it? Especially on those days when we’re feeling weak and wobbly in our faith due to some distraction, illness, or adversity. We don’t want to let our guards down. The internet is full of preachers and teachers, and a lot of them sound good. Jesus would not have warned us if the threat wasn’t dangerous.

two people praying together Jesus is hereLet’s pray. Lord Jesus, thank you for how you warned us of what we are encountering in this life. Thank you even more for your protection and wisdom. You always have my back, and for that I am forever grateful. Use me to reach the lost for you. I will celebrate with each new believer who chooses you and your truth over the messages of the world. Open my eyes to a new understanding of your Word so I can help others see you more clearly. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
