What perfect timing! That’s what they say about God’s timing. It’s always perfect. Can you recall a time in your life when something worked out just perfectly at the right moment? Did you give credit to God? I can think of several! Let’s share our stories over in the Facebook group, HERE. Look for the post, “God’s timing is perfect!”
In today’s reading, we see a curious king. He was wanting to learn about the great things Elisha had done. I don’t think it was out of jealousy but of wonder at what this prophet could do. His servant, Gehazi, would have example after example of the mighty things he had seen Elisha do (with God’s help).
We didn’t even know until now that Elisha had told the woman from Shunem to leave to avoid the famine. God was surely looking out for that woman and her son. Maybe it was to protect them so they could be part of this moment of revelation for Israel’s king? God has a way of putting people where they need to be at just the right time.
This also tells me that there is more to the story. We don’t know the half of what God did through Elisha or his other prophets. We have the accounts that made it to his Word, and those are enough to give us a taste of God’s grace and mercy. Does it leave you wanting more?
God’s Word is full of examples where God acts amidst the everyday lives of his people. We can think of one example that stands out from all the rest. Jesus. God became one of us so we could sense him up close and personal. If we want to know God, we get to know Jesus.
We can continue to read the pages of God’s Word for “more” as well. We can fill ourselves up with the promises and wisdom God gave to us. The Bible is such a gift! Don’t forget to ask the Holy Spirit to give you guidance as you read it, especially the hard-to-understand parts.
The last little bit that jumped out at me in this reading is God’s response to the woman’s faithfulness. She didn’t have to uproot her life and move her family to the land of the Philistines when Elisha told her to. Clearly, she had faith in Elisha’s God. Whether she was faithful before she encountered Elisha or not doesn’t matter. She was obedient to God now. And God rewarded her behavior just like he blesses us each day when we are true to him.
Are you being obedient to God with your life? Have you gotten out of your own head long enough to see God’s perfect timing? Are you ready for more of God?
Let’s pray …
Lord, thank you that you’ve got my back and your timing is always perfect. Help me to patiently wait for you to move before jumping into something I shouldn’t. Direct my path so I can give you the glory with my life. Protect me from the lies of the evil one that try to mess with my focus. Help me see clearly so that I can choose to follow only you, Jesus. Mold me. Guide me. Use me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
