2 Chronicles 33:1-25 – Bad to Good to Bad

Read 2 Chronicles 33:1-25

Manasseh was a nasty, wicked king. Mostly. After having such a devout father, I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me that the pendulum would swing in the opposite direction. Kids often rebel against their parents, and Manasseh would be a prime example of this. Everything that Hezekiah had established to please God and have a successful life was demolished.

Did this passage shock you, too, or was it just me? Some of the things Manasseh did were unforgiveable. My spirit just hurts for people who have chosen pagan lies over the truth. It happened to Manasseh and it’s happening like an epidemic in today’s world. How do you expect God feels about it? The LORD wants devotion, to be needed, and not abandoned.

Have you heard this great worship song called “Same God,” by Elevation Worship? It’s a powerful song reminding us that the same God who led the heroes of faith in the Bible is still here today. Why aren’t we calling on that power?

The LORD tried to get Manasseh’s attention but was ignored, at least at first. Did you see how fast the LORD forgave Manasseh and gave him another chance? After all the detestable things Manasseh had done, all it took was for him to sincerely humble himself before God. God would know his heart.

In the end of Manasseh’s life, he acknowledged the LORD as the one true God. We’re told he “also encouraged the people of Judah to worship the Lord, the God of Israel.” That’s fantastic! Too bad his own son, Amon, the next king didn’t follow that wisdom. His reign ended very quickly.

Is God trying to get your attention? There’s lots of unfinished business around—he may have a job for you to do. Will you be ignoring or following?

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. LORD, you are my refuge and my strength. Thank you for going ahead of me to make a way for me to be with you forever. Forgive me for times when I don’t call on your power to help strengthen me. Forgive me, too, for the times when help arrives, and I am not ready to receive it. Help me be ready to receive and to give to others. Use me to encourage others to believe in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
