1 Thessalonians 5:8 – Thinking Clearly

But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.” (1 Thessalonians 5:8)

When I read this verse I sat up a little straighter in my chair, bursting with confidence in the Lord and his promise of salvation. We’ve been dealing with technical support for the past week on a new laptop that isn’t working. While that has nothing to do with my faith or trust in God, it has taken its toll on my confidence in humanity and my own understanding of all things technical. Being clearheaded sounds delightful!

Context: This verse in Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians comes amidst a discussion about the last days when Jesus will return. Paul was assuring his readers that while we don’t when this will happen, as children of the light we are in the best possible position to be ready. Jesus will return at the perfect time, and we need to trust that.

All these years later, we are still waiting for Jesus’ return with great anticipation. This memory verse encourages us and hints at the same wisdom Paul shared with the Ephesians about putting on the armor of God. God’s protection is all we need to face the giants of this world. When we put our trust in God, our confidence soars.

Too many times we seek confidence from the wrong source. We are looking for human approval and are often disillusioned or disappointed. God will never disappoint. His blessings continue to flow. We can clothe ourselves in the armor of our faith. I can’t imagine going through life without faith in God’s love and power. When I see people going through tough situations without faith, I just pray harder for them.

If you start to feel weak or wonder how you’re going to make it through a situation, think about your salvation. That is something that nobody can take away from us children of God. His promise is true and trustworthy. By merely refocusing on that assurance, you can sit up a little straighter and hold your head high. No matter what life throws at you, your future in eternity with God is secure. Those trials and struggles are temporary. Hallelujah.

My confidence comes from trusting you and knowing you have my back no matter how hard a situation can be. I know that one day I will rest with you, and my salvation is secure. You are always faithful and trustworthy. Purify my heart and make me stronger and fit for service. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
