Read Zechariah 12:1-9
This reading shows us how much God is doing to save and bless his people, not condemn them. Jesus’ own words to Nicodemus ring in my head from John 3:17. “God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”
Our prophecy in this reading is speaking of how God will deliver Jerusalem and Judah from their foes. The theme is “on that day.” What happens on “that day?” How will we know when “that day” arrives?
Think of “that day” as the time when God’s reign on earth is fulfilled in his anointed Davidic ruler, King Jesus. Can you imagine a time when there is no war, no hatred, no selfishness, no anger, no jealousy, no fear. Can you picture what eternal happiness looks like?
“On that day the Lord will defend the people of Jerusalem; the weakest among them will be as mighty as King David!” That is some strength. Recall King David was known for his prowess as a warrior king. He had a heart for God and trusted God’s leading into battle. The weakest will be like that! That could only mean that the Holy Spirit’s power is in control.
I’m circling back to the verse from John and adding the preceding verse. “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”
As you reflect on the victory for Jerusalem in this text, do so through the lens of Jesus’ words.
Let’s pray. Father, you are so wonderful for leading the way and giving us victory. Thank you for loving us that much! What a blessing to have the opportunity to know you and the promises you made in your word! Help me to be a good steward of all that you have given me. Help me on my mission of letting people know about you. Cleanse my spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
