Philippians 4:6-7 – Why Pray?

 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

Do you ever worry? There’s a lot to worry about as we go through our lives from tests in school, the safety of our children, finances, travel, growing old, etc. What is it for you? Remember God doesn’t want us to worry. Challenge yourself with a little longer memory verse here. Verse 6 is powerful all on it’s own as a reminder to pray. Adding verse 7 answers the question, “Why?”

Context: Paul’s letter to the Philippians is full of great wisdom and encouragement for the new Christians. He wants them to stay true to the Lord. They, too, must have been struggling with situations that were testing their faith. These verses are part of the solution Paul offers to encourage them in their faith. 1 Timothy 2:1-7 – Pray Now!

Paul urges us here. What an intense message! It’s not simply a suggestion that we pray. We are even told what to pray for. For other people. You know it’s a gift you can given another human being they may never know you gave. God is the one who matters anyway, and he will be pleased.

Paul’s urgent plea tells us how to pray as well. “Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.” Everyone we encounter needs a Savior. Everyone has a secret hurt or struggle, but not everyone has taken that to God. Our need for prayer has no bounds. That’s why intercession is so powerful. We can carry those burdens for others right to the throne of God!
