Romans 8:38 – Security

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.” (Romans 8:38)

The first time this verse hit me like a ton of bricks was during a funeral service. I’ll never forget my pastor husband was preaching on this text. Meanwhile, I had an overflow of guests in the church basement listening as the service was transmitted via speakers. When a verse strikes you with such intensity, you pay attention.

Context (Romans 8:31-39): Paul’s words comfort us, assuring us that God has chosen us, set us apart, and made us right with himself. Furthermore, nothing can separate us from God’s love. Paul was convinced of this, and he wanted the believers in Rome to know that. Those early believers would have been facing all sorts of adversity. Hearing that as believers we have God’s favor, his protection, his unwavering love, and ultimate victory in Christ would have fueled their confident hope in their salvation.

How does this verse strike you in this moment? Does it conjure up emotions of peace and comfort? Certainly, knowing absolutely nothing can separate us from God’s love can energize us.

When we encounter obstacles or find ourselves under attack for our faithfulness, this verse can make us feel secure. The security of having a relationship with Jesus as our protector cannot be measured. Nothing can take that away from us. Did you see that list of opponents Paul listed?

We all struggle with demons and fears that incapacitate us from taking action to deepen our faith. It’s as if the more good we do for the kingdom, the more we are attacked. Because we’ve been set apart, we have the assurance and security that no power can overtake us. We will not fall to our fears or worries.

Does that lessen your load just a little bit? If you’re feeling weighed down because you haven’t got it all figured out (you know what “it” is for you), then claim this verse. You are loved more than you can fathom by your heavenly Father. He is supporting you and will never let you go.

Here’s a great praise song to spend time with today called “You Never Let Go” by Matt Redman. Listen and feel the security of God’s power.

abiding in Jesus, praying womanLet’s pray. Lord, thank you for holding me tight and making me feel secure in your love. There is no place I’d rather be than in your loving arms. Forgive me for ever doubting you with feelings of worry or dread. May I claim this promise each time I am feeling weak, unsure, or under attack by the evil one. Strengthen me and draw me close. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
