Ezekiel 47:1-12 – What a Miracle!

Read Ezekiel 47:1-12

Remember the east gate contains the presence of God. That means the water Ezekiel sees is flowing from God himself. As such, that is some pretty holy water that becomes a rushing river. What a miracle!

This water begins as a shallow stream becoming deeper every 1000 cubits (1,750 feet). The significance of what was being revealed to Ezekiel about this deepening is unclear to me. Perhaps the meaning was hidden to Ezekiel as well. Then the man asked Ezekiel, “Have you been watching, son of man?” Suddenly, Ezekiel notices the trees growing alongside this waterway. Ezekiel 31:1-18 – Like a Tree

Read Ezekiel 31:1-18

Given just a few months after the last reading, God sheds light on what will happen to Egypt. At first, the message likens Egypt to what the mighty power of Assyria once was. The Pharaoh would know the Assyrian Empire had fallen years before to the Babylonians. That is the LORD’s first hint of Egypt’s downfall.

Next, the LORD’s message speaks of a great tree. Using tree metaphors is not new in Scripture. Trees can symbolize life, sustenance, and protection. Genesis 2:9 says this about the Garden of Eden: “The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground—trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” We all know what happened when Eve took fruit from the wrong tree!
