Paul wants to make sure he has covered the bases in terms of relationships within the church. It comes down to an attitude of respect that can also be applied to relationships outside the church family as well. Paul’s instruction to teach these things and encourage such behavior tells us of the importance of such practices. Paul was equipping Timothy to be a successful leader.

To maintain a thriving church, Paul starts by focusing on the elders and how they should be treated. “Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching.” Did you note the expectation that elders do their work well? I’m curious what being “paid well” meant in Paul’s day!

Titus 1:1-4 – What a Mentor!

Can you think of a time in your life when you had a mentor? That would be someone you seek advice from and look up to. Mentors also encourage you to do the right thing. Sometimes our parents play that role. For Titus, his mentor was Paul. Paul was very influential in the early Christian movement following his conversion. Paul knew that he had to raise up young leadership to “take the baton” so to speak if Jesus’ message was to reach the ends of the earth.

Titus was one of those bright stars that Paul worked with and nurtured. We see the welcome Paul gives to Titus in this letter. While Paul calls Titus out as his “true son in the faith,” the opening lines of this letter seem to be more of an commissioning for the work we (including Titus) are called to do. A good mentor will be clear in giving direction. The message then is to “proclaim faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives.”

Luke 5:1-11 – Follow Me

Read Luke 5:1-11

Does it take a miracle to follow Jesus? For some it may, and for others they will buy in because of the love and acceptance. Here in today’s story, we see a miracle, probably witnessed by many.

Picture the scene. Jesus had been teaching a huge crowd down by the lake. They were probably closing in, trying to hear better. Jesus sees an empty boat and all but “escapes” out into the water to preach to them from there. Perhaps his voice would also carry well.

Jesus used this then as a teachable moment for Peter,  James and John. It is obvious from Simon’s words that he was familiar with Jesus as he called him “Master” and later “Lord.”  Continue reading “Luke 5:1-11 – Follow Me”
