1 Corinthians 8:1-13 – What Do You Eat?

Next up, the Corinthians had questions about what they should be eating. However, it didn’t have anything to do with fitness or watching their weight. We have a hard time identifying with such things as leftover food used during idol worship. Today, idol worship looks a lot different than in Paul’s day, so what does this chapter say to us? Before Paul tackles their question, he says this: “But the person who loves God is the one whom God recognizes.” I want to love God so much He recognizes me, don’t you? I’m not sure how that line fits in with the rest of the theme of this reflection, but it sets up a great mindset for us. It has given me pause to think about what I am doing to attract God’s attention. How do we show Him our love and devotion? The Corinthians must have wondered if what they ate mattered. Hebrews 13:1-3 – Care for Others

Read Hebrews 13:1-3

It seems the sermon has ended. Scholars have noted that this chapter seems almost like it’s written by another author. I see it as the Preacher stepping down from the pulpit and getting more relational in his conclusion, bringing up real life applications. He answers the question, “What does it look to be a Christian under the new covenant?”

First and foremost, we are encouraged to love one another as brothers and sisters. Jesus left us with a similar calling in John 15:12, “This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.” Jesus loved us even deeper than as brothers and sisters. He gave his life for us. That’s close.

1 Corinthians 10:23-11:1 – Give Glory to God

Read 1 Corinthians 10:23-11:1

What if I had titled this reflection, “Be a People Pleaser” instead? After all, Paul does say, “I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do.” Taking that sentence out of context could easily lead us off course. Take careful note of Paul’s motivation. “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” and “I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.”

Paul’s discussion is still dealing with the idea of eating food used in worship of idols. This seems to be a very serious dispute for the first audience. I’m still grappling with what kind of food that could mean for us today.
