Psalm 82 – Who is Your Judge?

Read Psalm 82

God is the one and only judge. God is God and we are not. Those are the truths that spoke to me today. Much like the theme of the sermon in church yesterday, it’s about the motivation. Are we servants or are we trying to be God? Like Adam and Eve in the garden, they weren’t content with perfection, they sought power, the wisdom of God himself.

Yet, there are people on earth with the power to judge and control lives and societies. We have many times placed them in those places of authority. The U.S. Supreme Court, the International Court for Justice, and the United Nations, to name a few. But would agree that many more people than that “think” they are God.

Anytime we try to feebly do something on our own, we are in essence trying to be God. Maybe only subconsciously, but we are not relying on the best power of all. The power of the Holy Spirit is available to us 24/7. I was a little frustrated Saturday when I was trying to reach customer service only to learn that it’s only available Monday through Friday. I’m very thankful that God doesn’t have “off” hours. He is always there waiting patiently to help each of us. We just need to “get it” and rely on him.

We are nothing when we are separated from God’s love and protection. We may fool ourselves into thinking we’ve got it going on, but that’s just it, we’re being foolish. God’s guidance and direction in our lives should be what we strive for FIRST. His plans for us and provision are so much better than anything we could conjure up on our own.

So, why? Why do we continue to forge through life on our own, trying this course or that one? Is it just me? Maybe I’m the only one that does this and everyone else is totally in tune with God’s direction. Maybe everyone else is walking in the, and it’s only me that falters, only me that walks ahead blindly, only me that has the confidence I can do it all. Somehow, I can’t imagine I’m the only one. Does this sadden you, too?

What must this maze of life look like to our heavenly father when all of us are walking around, going from here to there, busily making our way through life. If we say, “I’m living the American dream!” or “I’m doing i t my way this time,” then are we orphaned from our heavenly father having lost our true purpose? Is it good enough to be connected for 10 minutes a day or an hour on Sunday morning? Is that what God deserves from us?

I’m not trying to make anyone feel bad. I think we all need a wake up call though to some degree. We are called to worship God and love him with our whole heart. We are also called to love others with great compassion. When those two things are leading our lives, the connection stays stronger.

A song we sang in church yesterday, “Stronger” calls it out.  You are stronger, You are stronger, sin is broken, you have saved me… Listen here.

Let’s pray. Lord, forgive me for my loss of focus on you. Forgive me when I try to do things on my own without asking for your help first. You are stronger than anything power I could fathom. You are my hope and defense. I repent. Be with me today and may I radiate your love. You are Lord of all! I am yours. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
