Peter was quick to comment, but what would you say if asked, “Who is Jesus?” Have you ever thought about that? It’s a question we, as believers, should be ready to answer at any time. The answer defines us and our relationship with Jesus. It’s okay to be unsure, but it’s an important declaration to have on the tip of your tongue. Jesus’ message to us would be the opposite of keeping his identity a secret.
Next, our reading turns a bit dreary. We already know how hard it has been for the disciples to fully grasp what they are witnessing Jesus accomplish. Now, to hear him speak of his brutal death must have seemed unthinkable. We never want to hear news from friends or family about their death or mortality. Jesus’ departure sounded a lot more dramatic, and I can’t imagine what the disciples were thinking. Were they perhaps in denial?
Peter’s reactions display his character. What did you think of Peter? Would you have been as bold? Peter wasn’t afraid to make his opinion known. Jesus was quick to put Peter in his place. We need to be ready to accept correction from Jesus as well when our decisions get us off track.
Did Jesus’ rebuke of Peter, calling him “Satan,” surprise you? It did come off as a little harsh, but then Jesus knew Peter would need a strong “wake-up call.” You may have your own story about how Jesus has stirred you into action and brought you along on your faith journey. Jesus knows just how to get our attention and hopes that we respond and follow him.
Jesus speaks to all of us about our faith journey when he says this: “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.” What is Jesus saying? The cross example would have spoken volumes to his followers because crucifixion, a barbaric death on a cross, was common in their day. For our understanding, Jesus tells us to surrender ourselves and not rely so much on our own understanding or on the pressures of this world. Rather, turn to God and follow his will for our lives.
Christian music artist Matthew West has a great song called “Unashamed” (listen here). The lyrics are powerful. It’s a bold statement about living our faith out loud and surrendering ourselves, putting our trust and allegiance in Jesus. How will the world see you living your faith?
Jesus’ closing words can be confusing as we wonder what Jesus is promising. He certainly foreshadows something memorable. Rather than make any assumptions, since there is no clear agreement among Bible scholars, I’m going to suggest we sit with this promise and let the Holy Spirit reveal truth. As we continue reading Mark’s gospel, we’ll definitely see “great power” being displayed.
Let’s pray. Lord Jesus, thank you for how you continue to reveal yourself to us. Help me find the right words when introducing you to people who don’t know you or understand your power and love. I never want to be ashamed of my allegiance to you, no matter what opposition I may face. Fill me with the courage I need to be your faithful servant. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
