There are many people in the world that don’t know Jesus yet. It’s tragic to realize they don’t know the life giving promise Jesus means for us. Do we sometimes take Jesus’ love and protection for granted? What would we say if we were asked if we knew him?
Despite his objection, Peter answered those who questioned him, just as Jesus told him he would. Peter underestimated the power of the devil over his life. We probably do the same.
We see how Peter stayed close to Jesus following his arrest. Just as a close friend would, with the hope of saving or protecting his friend. But Peter didn’t blend in too well with the others warming themselves by the courtyard fire.
I was surprised they took Jesus to the high priest’s home after his arrest. I usually equate “arrest” with “jail” or some government facility. So, that was a little strange for me. The whole scenario is just a little odd, but then, arresting God’s son had never happened before, nor is it likely to happen again. History was written as it was meant to be.
It’s not clear how the house and courtyard were situated. We read that at the moment the rooster crowed, Jesus turned and looked at Peter. Peter’s mind cleared and he remembered Jesus’ words. We don’t hear what kind of a look Jesus gave – was it stern, was it full of sorrow, was it “I told you so” or was it “I still love you, Peter, please get out of here and be safe.”
Peter realized what he had done, and his reaction was clear. He wept bitterly and left the courtyard. It was good timing, actually, as it sounds like the beating and torture Jesus endured began soon thereafter. Peter could not have withstood such treatment of his friend and teacher.
Again, we need to ask ourselves how we will respond if we feel threatened and are asked about our faith and belief in Jesus? Do we stand firm and acknowledge our inheritance, do we play it safe and make no acknowledgement, or do we deny altogether as Peter had?
The tendency of our culture would be self preservation or even non- committal. Why don’t we have conviction for our beliefs?
Take some time today to think about your belief in Jesus. Do you trust him with your life? Are you ready to sacrifice everything for him like he did for you?
Let’s pray. Father as I walk through the final days and hours of Jesus’ life on earth, I am reminded of how much agony and sacrifice you made. The price was so high, yet you loved me that much. May I never question you or your intentions for me, even when I don’t understand. Help me to turn up the trust factor I have for you. I want to step outside of my comfort zone and be bold for you. Use me to awaken the sleeping giant of faith in those around me. May we not ever say “I don’t know him” when asked of our allegiance. I want to know you more. Open my eyes so I can see you more clearly. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
