Read Leviticus 14:33-57
The priests are now recruited as housing inspectors. There certainly would be plenty to do in the land of Canaan. Interesting that God said he “may” contaminate some of the houses with mildew. Just in case, this passage instructs the Moses and Aaron what the priest’s proper conduct should be.
When Moses was given this law, the people were still living in tents. God is talking about the future here. The mold and mildew attaching itself to their current tent dwellings was discussed in an earlier chapter. Knowing houses were in their future, even potentially contaminated ones, had to give them hope that they wouldn’t be roaming around the wilderness forever.
Mold and mildew are issues we still deal with in houses today. If you’ve ever had to deal with mold, you know how difficult it is to get rid of it. Since mold poses serious health risks to people, it makes perfect sense why God would have wanted to protect his people from this silent menace. Have you ever encountered mold in your house or workplace? Mold can also effect the structural integrity of a structure.
As I understand it, mold can be very difficult to keep at bay. It comes down to making sure you have good ventilation in the affected areas. The priest’s instructions here suggest a home may be destroyed if the mildew persists. I’ve not heard of any houses being demolished because of mold alone, but I would not be surprised.
The book of Leviticus is so interesting when you observe the different rules God felt the people needed to be safe and stay in relationship with him. I’ve mentioned our dear little puppy, and I know the challenge of making our yard and home ready for his curious exploration. Much like parents “baby-proof” their homes before their child begins to crawl or walk, we are doing them same for our little canine. God was doing this, and so much more, for the Israelites with his rules and regulations.
Does this passage say anything for us spiritually? Could the “mold” in our homes or our lives really be an infestation of sin? God does not want that “mold” or sin to take hold and bring ultimate destruction to our families. What radical changes may need to be made for us to take a stand against the evil trying to take us down?
Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for your word today. Thank you that we can come before you just as we are. You love us no matter what our sins are. You want our hearts to beat with yours. My heart cries out for those people caught up in the lies and deceptions of this world. Innocent people are being corrupted and losing sight of your truth. May I be bold in proclaiming your love and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
