Hosea 1-3 – Forgiveness & Love

Read Hosea 1-3

Did you get caught up in this shocking, yet powerful example of faith? You’ve just read three whole chapters; it was only 39 verses. How wonderfully it brought to life the theme of “Salvation, Forgiveness, and New Life”! How does Hosea’s story still resonate with us today?

You can sense God’s disappointment in his people from how he calls Hosea into service. Can you imagine having to marry a prostitute? But God said to do it, so, as degrading or sinful as it would seem, God was leading Hosea in that direction. God’s plan had a purpose and a meaning to convey.

Naming children in the Israelite culture was significant and often set the tone for their whole life. My heart broke a little for those innocent children being named in such a way to declare God’s plans for his people. Can you imagine having a name that meant “not loved”? Thankfully, the prophecy did call for a happy ending for those children.

These poetry-like verses describing Gomer, or more accurately speaking of Israel, are quite telling. Not only do they show how much God loves, but these verses also reveal how much God has been hurt due to Israel’s actions. Hosea speaks of Israel’s falling away and coming discipline and destruction.

If you felt challenged by all the imagery in this story, you are not alone. All this poetic language, full of hidden meanings, simply shows us the love and heartache God felt. It seems only right that God would have to correct Israel’s behavior in some way. God made these teachable moments come alive using the lives of Hosea and his wife. Would such an example speak to their wayward hearts?

Hosea’s prophecy does have a positive spin at the end. God doesn’t intend to abandon his people forever. After a lesson is taught, God’s mercies will flow again. It sounds like there will be a gap of time before the happy ending becomes reality. The text says, “In the last days, they will tremble in awe of the Lord and of his goodness.” The last days have not yet come. This prophecy remains poised for fulfillment. Will the last days come during our lifetime? That’s not for us to worry about. As our other readings have shown, our forgiveness and salvation are secure because we trust in Jesus.

How does that make you feel knowing God loves you and fights for you? Are you like me and have a rebellious side? Even by accident, we find ourselves pushing the limit with God’s grace. How should we act instead? Think of the last time you felt moved to trembling because of your love and devotion to God.

praying while looking up with sunset in the backgroundLet’s pray. Father, I do tremble with awe at the thought of you loving me so deeply that you fight for me every day. I know the battles rage around me, yet I feel safe in your loving arms. I know the temptations are screaming at me, but I trust you for your strength and way out. Forgive me for my carelessness and rebellious ways. I never want to be far from you like the Israelites. Help me to be more focused on you and your will for my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
