What more do we learn about faith in this part of Chapter 11? We meet more Bible heroes of faith, including Moses. His story is so complex, from his early days being rescued by an Egyptian princess to his adulthood devoted to God and being God’s instrument to bring the Israelites out of bondage. Moses is even thought to have written the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Pentateuch.
It’s faith like Moses had that can really kick start out relationship with God. What was Moses secret? “He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible.” Keeping our eyes on Jesus does help us stay grounded. Don’t exhaust yourself trying to do it on your own. Step out in faith from the start, keeping your eyes on Jesus, seeking his will and direction for your life.
A popular line in this passage is, “it was by faith that…” How would you complete that sentence in your own life? When have you relied on your faith to get you through a situation? When have you turned to Jesus for answers? Those are the stories that make up our testimonies showing Jesus’ power in action.
All the examples used by our preacher show God’s hand at work. God moves in our moments of faith. Sometimes it takes time for us to see or recognize. When we step out in faith, we are not alone. We have so many examples of that in the Bible to encourage and inspire us.
Our passage also speaks of the evil that can overcome us, even when we are being faithful. You might have been made fun of for your faith. People are still being killed for speaking the truth about Jesus. I don’t fear dying for my faith; I fear for those dying without faith.
This passage doesn’t sugarcoat the cost of being a believer. There are dangers and snares in this world. But there is also a great reward waiting for God’s faithful ones. Those great heroes of the Old Testament that the preacher brought to the minds of his congregation never met Jesus. I wonder how much they knew in their hearts about their Redeemer.
If you find yourself at odds with the world, being persecuted in any way for your faith, cling to hope in Christ. This world is temporary, and we are just passing through. Our home and final destination is our life after resurrection. We share that with all who have gone before. That hope is what gets us through each trial and is fueled by each victory. Let Jesus strengthen you today.
Let’s pray. Lord Jesus, I need you, oh how I need you. Help me to stay strong and always keep my eyes on you. Give me the strength I need to make it through this day. Temptations will come, so keep my feet securely grounded in your Word. I don’t want to get lost or be deceived by the world. May my faith grow deeper every day. I love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
