Read Galatians 5:16-26

Do these verses give you a clearer picture of the phenomenon of having a conscience? It’s a lot more personal than that when you imagine the Holy Spirit guiding your direction. In fact, as you get to know the Holy Spirit, you’ll begin to recognize the help you’re receiving. I’ve been known to say something like, “The spirit inside me is suggesting another way for me.”

I can almost picture the little devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. When situations warrant, these two fight it out. Just like verse 17b says, “These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.” As believers, we want the angel to win and protect us from making bad choices. We want to be listening to the Holy Spirit and letting him control. We’re much more likely to succeed and avoid temptation.

There is quite a list of unwise behaviors listed in these verses. You may even find yourself feeling guilty for your own sinfulness. The good news is we don’t need to stay stuck in our sin. We are redeemed when we choose Jesus over the world. But we must always stay vigilant against temptation.

Evil can often disguise itself as good, and we try to explain away our sinfulness. The Holy Spirit helps us steer away from those sinful tendencies. We’ll be tempted for sure, but when we put our trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit will help do the rest to keep us focused on something else. What better “something” than Jesus’ love and promises?

Mark your Bible with these verses. You’ll return often to remind yourself of the many benefits the Holy Spirit imparts when he is in control. We call these spiritual “fruits.” What a list! I’m sure you are wishing you had a little more of each of these: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” How different the world would look if others had the Spirit working in them.

These verses remind us that we have a Helper standing ready to direct our path away from sin and into the Father’s loving arms. He knows what’s best for us, even if we still don’t understand.

Thank you for how your Spirit fills me, guides me, and keeps me from going in the wrong direction. Help me to be mindful of your Spirit, always listening for your guidance even when I don’t understand. Help me with my patience and in exhibiting all your gracious blessings. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
