Read Ezekiel 47:13-23
God’s allotment of land is about to be distributed again between the tribes. When we think of land distribution, we can’t help but think of plot lines and setting boundaries. Ownership would be claimed. God’s perfect community was about to be built. We’re still waiting for the completion of this vision. It is comforting to see that “foreigners” living in the land will also be welcomed and considered “like native-born Israelites.”
The people hearing Ezekiel’s words may or may not have been aware of their ancestral home and tribal history. Many families had fallen away from the faith which had been such an important part of their forefather’s lives. Would they know which plot of land was theirs?
For some, religion had continued to make a permanent impression on them. Their faith and trust in God kept them from “falling away” from God. Do you see yourself a one who trusts in God for direction in life? God’s love sort of corrals you in.
When Ezekiel’s audience heard there was a special place set aside just for them, you can imagine the feeling of gratitude. How amazing is that grace! Did you realize we also have an inheritance because of our faith and trust in Jesus? How does it make you feel to know you have a forever future with Jesus?
Do you listen for Jesus’ voice? Ezekiel was listening to God. Listening hard. The assignment Ezekiel has been given was to share about the temple and all things related, including the land distribution. Lots of detail there! All part of God’s plan to reunite with his people. Boundaries are what it will take to keep the peace, set expectations, and exhibit fairness.
Were there other messages in the text today for you? Reflect on those as well as taking time to listen for the voice of God, the voice of truth.
If it’s been a while since you’ve listened to the Casting Crowns song, “Voice of Truth,” take a listen here. Love these lyrics: “Out of all the voices calling out to me I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth.” That’s how I try to live my life.
Let’s pray. LORD, you are my voice of truth. Help me to always turn to you for direction and help setting boundaries in this world. There are so many options for spending time facing me each day. I want above all to live a life that honors you. Help me to do that. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
