Read Ezekiel 40:1-37

First and foremost, we need to remember this is a vision God gave to Ezekiel for a purpose. These are God’s designs for a temple that has not yet been built! The first thing I notice other than this is another vision where Ezekiel is transported to a new location, was that it was twenty-five years into his captivity. That is a long time. Ezekiel’s ministry is apparently alive and well.

God was clear that this message was meant for the people of Israel. Yet, we know that the temple rebuilt by the Israelites returning to Jerusalem led by Ezra years later did not match these criteria. I find that a bit curious. But God’s plans are always perfect, so the second temple was apparently not meant to be constructed from this temple’s design.

As I understand it, there are some references that would suggest similarities to the temple described in Chapter 21 of the book of Revelation. That is the temple of the New Jerusalem in all its splendor.

We can speculate all day long about the meaning of this vision, but what I see most is that God is precise. Ezekiel witnessed the temple measurements so that he could share them. Psalm 18:30 says, “God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.” What a beautiful truth we can rely on when God’s word seems to leave us a bit unsure.

God’s revealing of information about this new temple will continue over the next few readings. It’s a beautiful thing to realize how God communicates with his people. One day, this majestic temple will be built for God’s people. For now, we can just marvel at God’s desire to be in relationship with us.

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. LORD, sometimes I don’t understand what I encounter in your word, and that’s okay. I know at the perfect time it will all make sense. In the meantime, I thank you for your desire to reveal yourself to me. Guide my steps and open my understanding. I thank you that you are my shield of protection. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
